Aftercare

Second Skin:

If I used the second skin on your new tattoo, leave it on anywhere from two to five days. You can shower with the second skin on. It is designed to let your fresh tattoo breathe but not let anything in. So getting it wet is not a problem. After the two - Five days, remove the second skin, preferably in the shower or under warm soapy water. Clean your tattoo off with luke warm water and antibacterial soap, such as Dial. Pat dry with a paper towel and let the tattoo air out for a couple of minutes then begin applying regular nonscneted hand lotion twice a day for the next week or until the tattoo doesn’t look like a bad sunburn. If, when you remove the second skin, there are any spots that look unhealed or scabbed, use a very small amount of triple antibiotic ointment or Aquaphor twice a day for a couple of days or until it looks like a bad sunburn. Then begin applying the hand lotion.

LESS IS MORE! Do not over medicate the fresh tattoo as it will result in slower healing. Do not pick or scratch at the healing tattoo.

If you have sensitive skin, keep an eye on the second skin as it may make the surrounding skin red and irritated. If this starts to happen, if water gets under the covering, or if you do not like the way the second skin feels, take it off and begin putting a very small amount of triple antibiotic ointment or Aquaphor twice a day for a couple of days. Then start using the non-scented hand lotion until the skin looks normal again. CLEANER THE BETTER! Wash your fresh tattoo at least twice a day (preferably before applying the ointment) let it air dry or pat dry with a paper towel. If you have any questions about either method of healing please contact the shop and we will be able to help you.

Here is an example of what your tattoo may look like while healing with the second skin aftercare method.

DON’T PANIC, YOUR TATTOO ISN’T SMEARING!

It is normal to see blood and excess ink under the covering.
